Instead you’re waking up thinking about what needs to be done dreading the added on work that all that clutter adds.  Maybe you don’t even realize that it is bothering you. You just don’t feel excited or invigorated for the day. Your surroundings can have a lot to do with your mood.   A cluttered home can cause chaos to your emotions.

Clear the Clutter

The first thing you need to do is step back and take a look around.  Imagine yourself as a stranger walking into your home. What do you see?  Mail on the table, clothes hanging off of chairs, a couple pairs of shoes on the floor, boxes stacked in a corner, unfolded clothes piled up?  I am sure all of our lists would look different but it all is clutter. Another thing that needs to be done is to admit that you have too much stuff.  I know that is hard to do. We have the items because we like them. Clearing the disorder needs to be done.  I sat down and made up a checklist of rooms and what to go through that I will share with you.

This checklist helped me keep on track. If you are like me, getting distracted is easy to do.

Decluttering is the start to a simpler life.

    Getting Rid of the Excess

Once you are ready to start going through items it is not just about finding a place to put them.  You need to decide if you are going to keep it or throw it out.

Having an excess of items leads to clutter.  Having a place for something is great but is it hard to put that item there?

For example you bought a bookshelf for all of your books but you have so many books that the shelves are full. You would have to push all the books over and jam the one into its place.  It’s just easier to set it on the table and think you will put it up later.

Guess what? One week later that book is still there with another one sitting right next to it. Am I right? Yes, figuring out what to throw out is hard but it’s something that needs to be done to have a clutter free home.
