Farmhouse decor is the most popular interior decor right now. It has been on the top since Joanna Gaines hit it big. As you start reading this it may seem that I am not a big fan of this style of decor. Please read on and you will see how I am but with a few changes that show everyone my own uniqueness.

I am a fan of farmhouse decor and Joanna Gaines. My house was decorated this way back in the year 2000 (before I lived in a house with property and animals) and ever since.
I was big into painting murals on the walls. (This was more popular back in the late 90s and early 2000s) Starting my farmhouse look I had painted a goat peeking out from my kitchen island and a couple of pigs laying next to my kitchen table.
My walls were painted sage green with white trim and still are. Antiques and a farm table were and still are in my home. Everyone that came in said how comfortable and welcoming my house was. So I continue with my same farmhouse decor but change it up a bit ever so often.
Farmhouse Decor can be unique.
In the title, I say end the cookie-cutter look. What I meant by that is everywhere I look every photo seems to look the same. To me, everyone’s house should have some uniqueness to it. Try to be different in some way. It’s okay to take a picture from a post and design your decor from it. Just try and change it up a bit. Choose the table below instead of the usual white add some drama with a dark table with extra storage.

Painting is my favorite go to design.
Painting a wall is a big decor change. Maybe throw in a different color. Just because you look at the paint swatches from many blogs that say these are the colors to use. You definitely don’t have to use those colors.
Take my family room, for instance, we just painted it a darker grey-green from Valspar called Tornado Watch. I decided to go a little darker than the normal color tones to change it up a bit since it is the room with the fireplace. It makes it a little cozier than the cooler tone color of the sage green.
There is nothing wrong with beige walls, a white table, a pillow with some saying, greenery, and a basket and a sign that says some farmhouse thing. Just make sure it is the decor you enjoy and it welcomes you into the house.
Also, the signs that you choose should be you and your family’s personality. For example, don’t get the Hey Y’all if that is not what you would say. A Hello would be just fine or even Hey There!
One of the main reasons I like the farmhouse look is because it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can use found items, homemade items, and even things that don’t match.

My favorite piece of furniture I own is one I found 18 years ago. It was sitting on the side of the road waiting for the garbage truck.The paint is chipped off in places and the wood is in rough shape that is what I love about it. When I saw it I got my van and loaded it up. There is nothing wrong with getting items from the side of the street. I think it is great.
It’s a wonderful way to recycle.
Painted Furniture
I’m not a big fan of the orange in a lot of wood tones so I like to paint my furniture. If it is new I won’t paint it but if it needs to be redone I usually paint it instead of re-staining it. My color is usually white with a dark brown wax to show the accents on the piece. This is one area that I like white. I have started to throw in some color with my furniture. Choose an accent color that you use throughout your decor and get a piece of furniture that color.
Trying to follow my own advice I recently refinished my television stand. While I was sanding it down I realized it was solid wood. The wood was in great shape.
Deciding to leave the wood sanded down I whitewashed the drawer. Then immediately regretted it. So the whitewash came off and I left it as it was with some of the old dark stain left on. I absolutely love it. It probably isn’t for everyone but I like it and it is a unique piece for my house.
Let your unique farmhouse shine!
Just remember your house should show you and your family’s personality. It’s okay to change things up a bit. It’s okay to look at a blog post or Pinterest and get some ideas. Just change a color or a pillow out to what you like best.
It still will be the Farmhouse style that is loved.
