4 Things You Do Not Do When Decluttering

What not to do when you declutter your space. This is something that doesn’t get talked about too much but I thought I would mention it. Last week when working on decluttering my closet I found myself doing a couple of these items. I am going to pass them on to you so you won’t make the same mistakes while decluttering and organizing.

Do not start without gathering all items.

First of all, gather all items in the Decluttering post. This includes the checklist. It will help you stay on track. If you haven’t downloaded it yet see below to get it.

Not sure where to start?

This free checklist will lead the way.

If you haven’t read my other post on Where to Start Decluttering give it a look. It will get you ready to have everything you need to declutter.

Not having all of the items will make the decluttering go a lot slower than what you want it to.

    box, packaging, box

Jump around from space to space.

Make sure you declutter one spot at a time. Jumping around from one area to another makes it seem like you aren’t making any progress. In order to keep motivated, you have to see progress. Remember that’s what the checklist is for to help you stay on track in the same area and keep you motivated.

Think you will declutter it all in one day.

Decluttering will not get done in one day. Whatever you don’t try and be a superhero. Going through everything will take time. Yes, you probably can go through a dresser in a day or even just an hour. Just don’t expect to do it all. Getting burned out too fast won’t get the job done.

Revisit donate or throw away boxes.

I will admit this is where I get into trouble. This is why I have you gather all of the items that are needed to declutter first. If you just make piles and think you will pick them up and put them into boxes or bags to be donated later you will find that some items may find their way back into your closet or dresser.

If you don’t do these 4 things you will be off to a great start at decluttering your space.
