What Theme Are You Wanting?
To keep it easier to plan your decorations you will need to have a theme. A theme doesn’t have to be something like pirates or Harry Potter even though those are fun ideas. It can just be a couple of colors, stripes, flowers anything that you want to be the focus. Just give yourself a jumping-off point to start planning.
Still not sure which way to go? A great place to get ideas is Pinterest. There are all kinds of ideas to get inspiration from.
DIY Balloon Party Decorations
Balloons are my favorite way to decorate and an easy way to do DIY party decorations. When my kids were little I would make all kinds of decorations with balloons. One of my favorite parties I did was an Under the Sea Party. I made fish out of the long balloons and the round balloons. I then put blue crepe paper on the ceiling to look like waves and hung the fish balloons from a string. The kids thought it was fun pretending to be underwater with the fish. Making things from balloons can be fun and easy. I found this tutorial from The Amazing Balloon Guy which is pretty easy to follow.
Balloon archways and columns are a very popular way to decorate now. It can be so elegant looking. There are kits out there that will help you create the arch or column in the colors you want. Adding lights to columns is another way to add some excitement to the party. Balloons add so much to your party decor.
Signs and Banners
It’s hard to find a unique sign or banner for a party. They all either say Congratulations or Happy Birthday, Yay! is a new one. Everyone has seen them. Last year I looked at graduation banners and then again this year. Yep, you guessed it they were all the same ones. So instead of being like everyone else why not make your own? Be unique. Whoever you’re making it for will appreciate the fact that you went the extra step in making their day special.
A great tool that I use and many Etsy sellers use is a Cricut machine. I own the Cricut Explore and the Cricut Joy and love using them both. The Explore can be used for larger projects and the Joy can be used for smaller ones and it makes great banners. If you own a Cricut product you have the ability to make all of your decorations for your party.

Let’s Eat Cake!
Cakes or cupcakes can also be used for decorations. There are so many ways to decorate your cupcakes and cakes. From swirling your frosting to buying sprinkles for the top and even cupcake holders. So many different options out there. Cakes don’t take as much time for the DIYer as cupcakes at the start. But during the party cupcakes are a time saver. No worries about cutting the cake just announce that it is cupcake time and start handing them out. It’s all about ease for me.
Talking About Cake
Since we are on the topic of cake. How about those toppers? There are so many out there it is hard to decide on which one to buy. Toppers come in many shapes and sizes. Some of you might be wondering what a cake topper is. They are sayings or little decorations on sticks that you can stick into the cake or cupcakes. Cake toppers are a great easy way to decorate your own DIY cake that you just frosted. This is an item I say is a must to add to your decorations. As I mentioned before there are so many out there why don’t you take a look and get some ideas and make your own personalized topper with the Cricut Maker or any of the other machines. You can choose the colors and sayings you want. Not to mention all the sparkle from glitter if you want. I found this great video on “How to make a cake topper” by Zhannastar.
Making Your Own Party Decorations
Making your own party decorations can be a great way to personalize your party. Being able to combine different colors that aren’t usually found together for parties is a lot of fun. Some names or occasions are not easily found either. You don’t have to go all out with the amount of party decor. Just choose a few select decorations that you would like to make and make them pop. Remember less is more.
