Packing Tips for Moving

Since you already have read the first post in this series you might already have the packing materials gathered or on order. If not here is a great moving kit at a reasonable price. Gathering all of the items first will help make moving easier.

Earlier You Pack the Better

The earlier you start packing the better. Something always will go wrong if you pack up in a rush. As a result there is a good chance of your fragile items getting broke or furniture chipped. Believe me I know I’ve done it. Not only did I have broken items I brought things that I didn’t want to bring with us. Talk about a waste of time and money. So please start as early as you can.

Even though don’t pack up items that you will need in the coming weeks since that would make living a little challenging.

Important Papers

Go through and find all of your personal files that you may need in the near future. You may already have them in a filing cabinet however you will probably need them with you at times. The filing cabinet might get buried and be hard to reach. Put them in a portable container that is waterproof and colorful. Something that will say “Here I am.” Keep them where you will know where they are at all times. Only you can move them.

The important papers you might need are birth certificates, immunizations, social security card, medical papers, bank statements if no access online, voter id card and anything else that is important to you. Even the mortgage papers you just received. Keep those handy just in case you need to prove residency.

Schools

Once you know where you will be moving to check to see what schools the children will be going to. Find out what paperwork they will be needing from the school they are attending now. If it is the summer the school still should be open to get this information. Although doing some research online might be all that is needed. Another item to find out is dress code. There are some districts that require uniforms. Also some schools don’t allow backpacks anymore.

If you are planning on the children to be riding the bus right away remember to contact the transportation department of the school to find out for sure what bus and where they will pick the kids up. The school office might not know the exact bus information.

Do some research and see what you can find out before you walk into the school office to enroll. This will save a lot of frustration.

Utilities

This is one of the important moving tips. Utilities need to be turned off and on at each place. Scheduling of this is a necessity. The companies require this to be scheduled.

Turning off the utilities need to be scheduled when they will not be needed anymore. Make sure you don’t schedule them to be disconnected to early, especially the electricity, gas and water. Of course not to late either. The new owners might rack up a bill you would have to pay for.

Turning on the utilities of the new house needs to be scheduled before you are ready to live there. Electricity, gas and water would be a good idea to get connected on the day you move in or the day before if you have possession of the property. Internet, phone and such you will need to be there so plan accordingly on those.

Electronics Moving Tips

All of us have some kind of electronics with all sorts of cords. Before the packing actually begins grab your cell phone and take pictures of the backs of each item. This way you or whoever puts it all back together will know how it all goes.

Make sure you can tell what each item is or put a post it note on the back so it will show up in the picture.

Cleaning

The last thing we want to do at the end of the moving day is to clean. Clean as you go. If you have packed up one area do a deep cleaning on it. Then all you will have to do before you hand over the keys is to do a light cleaning. Remember never leave the house dirty if you’re renting it will cost you a cleaning fee. If you sell the buyers might complain and say you didn’t follow the contract.

Valuables

Always take your valuables with you. Never trust anyone else with them. They are to important and worth too much to have someone else take responsibility for them. If you do decide to hand them over do not plan on them being accountable for them. Smaller items can be put in a purse or backpack that will be with you. If larger item make sure they are in the vehicle you will be in. Know where they are at all times. Move them in first to a safe place.

Last of the Moving Tips

Make sure that everyone that is helping you move knows the date of the move. Keep reminding them weekly and ask them if they are still able to help. Let them know that you will be providing drinks and food if you are planning to. I highly recommend drinks and food be supplied by you. Even if you hire it all done. This helps keep everyone happy. Don’t let them get “hangry”.

Happy Moving!
