Reasons Why Your House Isn’t Selling

There are 3 possible reasons why your house isn’t selling. I’m not going to say price because your real estate agent should have done their homework and advised you on the market. What I’m going to tell you are 3 reasons that can keep your house from selling quickly and for your asking price.

House isn’t Selling Because of Furniture

Your furniture may be why your home isn’t selling. I’m not saying it’s out of style or too old; it’s that you have too much.

Furniture can make a room look smaller. Step back and take a look at each room and see what you can remove from each one. Don’t take everything out the buyer needs to see what potential the room has and what it can be used for. Just make sure there is a lot of open space.

For example, in a living room, if you have a sofa, 2 chairs, a coffee table, and a side table, consider removing one chair, the coffee table, and possibly the side table.

The image above shows a minimalist decor with space left around the furniture for movement. Removing the footstool and side table would help open up the space.

This will make the room look bigger.

Personal Items

Personal items are another reason for not selling in a timely manner. Buyers walk in and see your life, not the life they want to live. Yes, there needs to be items in the house, just not too unique personal items like photographs of family members, deer heads, shelves filled with collectibles, etc.

Think about a hotel room. It has been decorated in a style that appeals to the masses. That’s how your house needs to be decorated to sell.

Too many personal items can be a distraction to the buyer. They’ll look at pictures instead of the house

Clutter is the Third Reason

Too much stuff is clutter to the buyer. You might not see it as clutter, but a buyer will. Go through all of your closets and get rid of unused items (you don’t want to move those anyway). Same as kitchen and bathroom cabinets, drawers, pantry, and any place a buyer will be checking out for space. Do n’ot worry about dresser drawers, they shouldn’t be going through those.

Clean off shelves, remove any visual clutter anything the buyer can look at and think of as clutter.

Kitchen and bathroom counters need to be cleared of most items. A few decor pieces or one small appliance like a mixer can be left out.

Too much clutter brings down the value of the home.

Summary

Too much furniture = smaller home

Too much personal items = no emotional connection

Too much clutter = less perceived value
